Types of Animals that Can Damage Your Home or Property There are a copious amount of animals in the wild that are capable of damaging your property. Although some of the more prevalently seen animals, such as squirrels, are over-looked as a threat, this is not the case. Many wild animals have the ability to affect the well-being of our properties and even the structural makeup of our homes. Continue reading to learn which animals to keep an eye on, and what areas of your home to watch.

Starlings

Starlings are known to be native to Europe; however they do migrate to parts of North America and compete for habitat here. They are identified by their dark blackish color. They look sweet and harmless, but they are threats to our properties. As mentioned, they have trouble integrating with the local bird community; so instead, they use residential and commercial real estate as their shelter. They will nest in small areas, such as gutters, under roof shingles, in vents and air conditioners, crawl spaces, and more. Not only can they damage the structural makeup of our properties, their droppings can cause equal amounts of damage too. Their droppings are corrosive, and the accumulation can cause structural deterioration over time. It can also grow fungus that turns into Histoplasmosis, a dangerous airborne spore that can cause lung disease and more. Bat guano also promotes the growth of Histoplasmosis, which can be dangerous if inhaled over long periods of time.

Bats

Bats are another animal that can cause extensive damage to a property. They like to nest in small dark areas; such as attics, crawl spaces, roof tiles, garages, and similar crevices. Their nesting habits are messy, as well as their droppings. Just like Starlings, bat droppings also create a fungus that causes Histoplasmosis. This is a dangerous disease that affects the lungs and respiratory system. Not only can a bat infestation cause harm to your property, it can potentially cause infection and disease in people too.

Pigeons

Pigeons, just like Starlings and bats, can create a huge mess of your home or office if they reside in your town. They are plentiful, meaning they come in large numbers, rather than small flocks. This can be overwhelming to a yard, parking lot, or any other residential or commercial property. Their droppings cause large messes and are difficult to clean up. It can change the aesthetic value or appearance of a home or office drastically. Along with the labor of clean up and the extent of their droppings, pigeons are filthy birds that carry diseases, parasites, mites, and fleas. If they are inside your home, call an animal removal company immediately.
